Storage Server - DAS , SAN , NAS

Are you looking for a suitable storage solution for your company? Then you have the choice between a variety of storage server options. The volume of data has been growing continuously for years, which means that storage requirements are also increasing many times over. We offer you a wide selection of storage solutions for your server in our Servermind Shop. The differences between the individual solutions are explained below.

Direct Attached Storage (DAS) for high performance

This storage server solution is particularly suitable as a cost-effective entry into the storage sector. This is a storage solution that is connected directly to the server (Direct Attached). Connection types such as Serial Attached SCSI (SAS), FibreChannel Point to Point (FC-P2P) and all block-oriented transfer protocols from ATA/ATAPI to FireWire or eSATA through to USB with UAS can be selected.

If you opt for Direct Attached Storage as the storage solution for your server, you can look forward to higher performance compared to network storage. This is explained simply: the server does not have to cross the network to read and write data and therefore has no loss of performance.

Storage Area Network (SAN) - the Highspeed-Network

This storage server solution is an alternative to Direct Attached Storage. The connection is possible with FibreChannel, for example. It is possible for a server to access several storage systems. A major strength is therefore the good scalability, as additional capacity can also be added as required. Another strength of the storage area network is the high transfer rates. Thanks to fiber optic transmission and FibreChannel protocol with low overhead, these are roughly equivalent to those of direct attached storage. However, the difference lies in the distance that can be covered: this is definitely greater with the SAN than with the DAS. However, one weakness of the SAN storage server solution is the complicated configuration, which significantly increases the administrative effort, especially at the beginning. This requires administrators with the appropriate know-how.

Network Attached Storage (NAS) - Standard-Hardware with Storage-Laufwerk and RAID

NAS storage server solutions help companies to protect data, enable file sharing between employees and remote access. Network Attached Storage is standard hardware with dedicated storage drives and RAID. They often act as a file server to relieve other servers. The advantages of this special storage server solution include easier administration, fast access to data and simplified configuration. However, NAS solutions are not suitable for every application and the use of many NAS appliances can lead to bottlenecks.
